Ottawa – Gord Brown, Member of Parliament for Leeds-Grenville, today requested that the 1000 Islands Bridge Authority adjust its rate to reflect the higher value of the Canadian dollar.
“Canadians pay extra when our dollar is worth less than the US dollar. It is unfair that they continue to pay more when our dollar is worth more than the US dollar,” says Brown.
He sent an email to Robert Horr, Executive Director of the Bridge Authority, requesting that the rate be adjusted to reflect the real value of the dollars and that the authority adopt a mechanism whereby currency changes would be more regularly reflected in bridge crossing prices.
“I realize that the rate can’t be adjusted daily, but it should be reviewed on a more consistent basis so we don’t have these discrepancies,” he says.
While it is only a 25 cent difference for cars it is more significant for trucks and other commercial and recreational vehicles.
In May 2006 Brown wrote to the authority when the Canadian dollar had increased significantly and the rate was adjusted by 80 cents.
